Aerobic Interval Training in Optimizing the Effects of Open Heart Surgery

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of aerobic interval training after open heart surgery..

METHODS: The study enrolled 63 patients (48 men,15 women, mean age 57+-12) after coronary artery bypass grafting. The training was conducted over 2 weeks: in 16 days after surgery and later in outpatient care after 6-12 months. The first 7 day trainings were conducted according to the Protocol with a constant pulse (Pulse steady state); the second week of training - with ramp – interval. The procedures were held 3-5 times per week. After the first and the last session on Bicycle Ergometer, exercise tolerance was evaluated heart rate, blood pressure, METS, and the changes of the ergospirometry parameters.

RESULTS: Analyzing main end-points following results were received: body mass index reduced (p=0,0032), end diastolic diameter decreased (p=0,0315), LV ejection fraction improved (p=0,045), VO2 peak increased, NT-proBNP (p=0,0015), reduced and HbA1c improved (p=0,023) compared to control group.

CONCLUSION: All data revealed that the physical training on veloergometer in the period of 12-16 days after a cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation is safe. A 2-week course of early physical training leads to the significant increase in peak VO2 at 1.8 ml/kg/min, and to the increased tolerance of physical load by 1.3 MET. Obtained results allow to implement aerobic interval training individually in early postoperative period.
