Overview of Thoracic Surgery in Vietnam

Abstract

Objective: In Vietnam, thoracic surgery has been thriving for the past 15 years, about 10 centers and less than 10,000 operations per year. Although it is still limited, but has gradually followed the general trend of the world, from specialized training to diagnostic technologies and surgical procedures, and treatment - follow up after surgery. Thoracic surgery is step by step independent of cardiac and vascular surgery and gradually becomes a specialty with its own training and certification programs. The report to introduce the story and up-date overview of thoracic surgery in Vietnam. Methods: The overview report based on data from the Vietnam Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Results:Preoperative diagnostic technology is increasingly advanced, to determine tumor (multiple scans, PET, IMR, bronchoscopy), and tumor nature (biopsy under CT guidance, immunohistochemistry, target cell testing, lung endoscopy - mediastinum + biopsy, etc.), providing detailed treatment guidance. Surgical indications are broader for cancer diseases, including some special cases of stage IIIb (T3-4, N2), IV (M1), postoperative radiotherapy, surgical removal of tumors in complex surgical sites. Surgical technique developed in the direction of less invasive - VATS (small open thoracic surgery, thoracic endoscopic surgery, tools clamp - cut tissue in surgery, evacuation of ganglion groups ...) and surgical treatment procedures increasingly friendly towards the "multi-model form", associated with chemotherapy - postoperative radiotherapy by disease stage, treatment of target cells ... Conclusions: Therefore, the thoracic surgery is becoming more and more specialized, the earlier and more accurate the diagnosis, the more reasonable treatment and the better postoperative results. In the near future, it will catch up with the development of cardiovascular surgery as well as other advanced disciplines
