Abstract

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) compile 2.5% of all congenital heart disease and is the most common congenital anomaly, leading to death within the first year of life in the United States. Without surgical treatment 95% of infants with HLHS die within the first month of life.

Materials and methods. From 2005 to 2014 year, 40 consecutive patients with HLHS underwent Norwood procedure in the Samara Regional Cardiac Center. The aim of the study is to estimate 9-year experience with palliative surgery for HLHS.

Results. Early mortality after Norwood procedure was 50% (20 of 40 patients). From 2005 to 2011 year mortality after Norwood procedure ranged from 50 to 75%. There was marked improvement in survival from 2012 to 2014 year. Mortality at that period ranged from 40 to 28.5%.Five patients died between stage I and stage II. Fifteen patientsunderwent bidirectional Glenn shunt with the mortality 6.6% (1 patient).Three patients died between stage II and stage III. Seven patientsunderwent Fontan procedure with the mortality 16.6% (1 patient) and 4 patients are waiting for the Fontan completion. At the time of follow up, 10 (25%) patients survived

Conclusions.Treatment of patients with HLHS is the most challenging task in pediatric cardiac surgery. Improvement in results are possible with the accumulation of experience
